A lawyer is required to purchase real estate in Barbados

If you are considering purchasing real estate in Barbados, then by law you are required to use an attorney to complete the transaction.

Choose an attorney that has real estate experience

The peculiarities of Barbados’ conveyancing laws, the absence of any scheme of title insurance, and the predominance of unregistered title to land are factors which make real estate transactions in Barbados all point to reasons why the registered attorney is absolutely necessary. Further, it is highly recommended that you use an attorney who has considerable experience in closing real estate transactions.

The danger of choosing an attorney with little or no real estate experience

  • Conducts a search of the register to establish title to the property.
  • Prepares the agreement for sale, the deed of conveyance and the deed of transfer.
  • Records the title, deeds and certified survey plans at the registry.
  • Ensures that there are no encumbrances, charges, encroachments, or other impediments on the property.
